Jim Block

Jim Block contributes to numerous New England publications and teaches digital photography in his home studio. He was the sole photographer for two nationally-distributed garden calendars and for a series of four Birding Trail Guides for the Connecticut River valley region. Over one hundred of his images have been used on the covers of magazines, books, and other publications. He has been a full time professional photographer for nine years following a successful career in business and engineering.

Tovar Cerulli is author of The Mindful Carnivore: A Vegetarian’s Hunt for Sustenance. He lives in Vermont and has worked as a logger, carpenter, and freelance writer. He is currently enrolled as a PhD student at UMass-Amherst, where his research focuses on food, hunting, and human relationships with the natural world.

Lisa Densmore

A long-time resident of Hanover, New Hampshire, Lisa Densmore is an award-winning photographer, freelance writer, and Emmy-winning television host and producer who specializes in nature, outdoor, and adventure-travel topics. Her images have appeared in numerous magazines as diverse as Backpacker, Ski Racing, and Women in the Outdoors, in books, newspapers, art galleries, even on skis and cars. In addition to her magazine writing, she is the author of several books, including Best Hikes with Dogs: New Hampshire & Vermont (The Mountaineers Books 2004) and Hiking the Green Mountains (Falcon Guides 2009). Mary Holland

Mary Holland, naturalist, wildlife photographer, columnist and author, resides in Hartland, Vermont. Mary’s work in environmental education includes directing the state-wide Environmental Learning for the Future (ELF) program for the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) for eight years, working as a resource naturalist for the Massachusetts Audubon Society, designing and presenting her own hands-on Knee-high Nature Programs for libraries and elementary schools throughout Vermont and compiling Vermont’s Rare Bird Alert for five years for the Vermont Center for Ecostudies.  In addition to writing for The Outside Story, Mary currently photographs for and writes a nature column for the Harvard Press, a weekly newspaper in Harvard, Massachusetts, and the Valley News, a daily newspaper for the Upper Valley, out of Lebanon, NH as well as the new Upper Valley magazine, Kid Stuff. 

Mary has a degree from the University of Michigan where she specialized in the Naturalist Curriculum in the School of Natural Resources. She has written and photographed a children’s book, Milkweed Visitors, which introduces young and old alike to the insects that visit a milkweed patch.  In September, 2010, her seasonal natural history guide to New England, Naturally Curious, will be published by Trafalgar Square Books.  Mary has an extensive collection of natural history artifacts. Robert Kimber

Robert Kimber lives in Temple, Maine.  He has spent much of his life in country places and county pursuits, and his books reflect those interests, as do articles written for Audubon, Field & Stream, Yankee, Down East, and a number of other magazines.

Gerry Lemmo

Gerry Lemmo is a professional freelance photographer, specializing in wildlife images from around the globe. For thirty years, Gerry has presented hundreds of color slide presentations on a great variety of subjects, to schools, libraries, and other organizations. As a well-rounded naturalist, writer, and world traveler, he is a sought-after speaker for both young and mature audiences alike. Although he has photographed on six continents, Gerry creates most of his images in his Adirondack home region. Gerry Lemmo’s photographs and articles appear regularly in Adirondack Life magazine. Todd McLeish

Todd McLeish is a science writer for the University of Rhode Island who has also written more than 100 articles for magazines and newspapers about natural history and environmental topics. He is the author of Golden Wings and Hairy Toes and the forthcoming Basking with Humpbacks, books which feature efforts to protect endangered species in New England. Todd is also an avid birder and a former world joggling champion (juggling and jogging).

Elinor Osborn

Elinor Osborn, an award-winning photographer, specializes in outdoor subjects: natural history, scenics, outdoor sports (cross country skiing, sled dogs), scientists’ work (trumpeter swans, loons, endangered moths), fairs, and parades. Photos and articles appear in magazines (Vermont Life, Click, Cross Country Skier, Northern Woodlands, Stowe Guide, Nature’s Best and others), in many books, and on websites. “Project UltraSwan” (published by Houghton Mifflin), written and photographed by Elinor, tells the story of the trumpeter swan migration project using ultralight aircraft. Bryan Pfeiffer

Bryan Pfeiffer is an author, nature photographer, consulting naturalist and field guide specializing in birds, butterflies and dragonflies. His essays and articles have appeared in The New York Times, Vermont Life, Field & Stream and Northern Woodlands, among others. Bryan is co-author of Birdwatching in Vermont, a guide to finding and enjoying the state’s birdlife, and he is the host of the Vermont Public Television special “Birding in Vermont.” When he’s not chasing birds, Bryan has been chief field staff for the Vermont Butterfly Survey (which means he chases butterflies) and is an authority on dragonflies. Bryan lives in Plainfield, Vermont, where he wanders the landscape enjoying everything from ferns to frogs, orchids to otters. His latest obsession is fireflies.

Mark Picard

Mark Picard, a self taught wildlife and nature photographer, has been capturing images for over 30 years - specializing in his exquisite work on Moose. He is noted for his creativity in the field; not only in composition and lighting, but also in his use of equipment, blinds, and knowledge of animal behavior. His images have appeared in numerous national and international publications, books, and calendars. Mark also presents educational programs and slide shows to many schools, camera clubs, and nature organizations. He leads personalized photo group workshops/tours and individual one on one instruction in the North Woods of upstate Maine (View ‘09 Schedule And Description) as well as local photo workshops. A member of the Fuji Pro Talent Team, he is well versed in both film and digital formats, including post production digital workflow and Photoshop. He also has led the Nikon sponsored L.L. Bean Outdoor Discovery School Moose Photography Getaway Weekends each June in upstate Maine as well as a workshop/tour for the Great American Photography Workshops in the Fall.

Jim Schley

Jim Schley, who is Northern Woodlands poetry editor, has been co-editor of the literary quarterly New England Review and editor-in-chief of Chelsea Green Publishing Company, and he has edited more than a hundred and fifty books on a wide variety of subjects. He is now managing editor of the book publisher Tupelo Press and an associate member of the journalists’ collective Homelands Productions. Author of a collection of poems, As When, In Season (Marick Press, 2008), he lives off-the-grid on a land cooperative in Strafford, Vermont.

Susan C. Morse

Susan Morse is a nationally recognized naturalist and habitat specialist with thirty years of experience tracking and interpreting wildlife uses of habitat. She has been an active participant in Western Forest Carnivores Committee meetings and she is currently a founding member of the Northeast Carnivore Conservation Working Group.  Her research has focused on cougar, bobcat, black bear, and Canada lynx.  Susan was the recipient in 2001 of the Franklin Fairbanks Award for her lifelong creative and dedicated service to enriching the awareness and understanding of the natural world among the residents of New England. Catherine Tudish

Catherine is a writer and teacher who lives in Strafford, Vermont.  Her first book, Tenney’s Landing: Stories, was published by Scribner in 2005.  Her second, a novel, American Cream was published in Autumn 2007.

Gustav W. Verderber

Gustav W. Verderber, a professional environmental interpreter with a Master of Science degree in zoology, photographs, writes, and teaches about nature and environmental issues. He is an award-winning nature photographer with credits that include Northern Woodlands, Natural History, Nature Photographer, Nature’s Best, The National Audubon Society, Vermont Life, Vermont Magazine, The Green Mountain Review, Sierra Magazine, Yankee, scientific journals, newspapers, and children’s publications. His multimedia presentation, “Sojourns in the Wild”, has received standing ovations from coast to coast and he continues to produce new versions of his acclaimed presentation which features original scores by noted composer, William Jackson, as he travels the world adding exciting new images to his portfolio.
